This is one of the theories on why New Coke was introduced as a way to switch over from sugar to high-fructose corn syrup, and get everyone ready for the change in sweetness. There was also the focus on replicating the sweetness that people were experiencing with Diet Coke, but in the full-sugar variety. Either way, with HFC becoming so much cheaper than sugar, there was no way they weren't going to use it.
