Warner Bros. has just announced that their entire 2021 slate of movies will be released on HBO Max the same day they are released in theatres.
Does this spell the end of the moviegoing experience as we know it, or has the writing been on the wall for a while?
It feels as this move was inevitable, as the moviegoing experience has changed — despite the issues that happened with the pandemic. With the quality of streaming service options, many new titles have been released directly on to Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, and HBO Max.
Before the pandemic, the shift was starting to slowly happen. Releases were bypassing the theatre and going right to streaming platforms.
